A QUINTET of local organisations have scooped a special accolade which recognises top class health and safety standards.

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue service was among hundreds of organisations from across Lancashire and Greater Manchester who were honoured at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Occupational Health and Safety Awards.

Also among the winners at the awards, now in their 53rd year, were DCT Civil Engineering, Werneth, Chadderton-based Westshield Ltd, Shaw’s JD Williams and J Greenwood Builders, from Werneth.

The presentation ceremony took place at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

Tom Mullarkey, RoSPA chief executive, said: “Health and safety tends to hit the headlines in the aftermath of major accidents or when it is deemed to have gone too far. But the reality is that millions of sensible safety decisions are taken across the country each day which prevent countless accidents and the suffering they cause.

“The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards are a way of rewarding and highlighting those whose daily contribution keeps us safe and healthy, and we congratulate winners for the commitment they have shown to continuous improvement in this sphere.”
