THE race is on for anyone who still wants to sign up for this Sunday’s Keep Fit and Pink 10km walk in aid of breast cancer charity, the Genesis Appeal.
The walk, which takes place in Manchester city centre, boasts a star-studded line up, including TV presenter Gordon Burns, Rebecca Atkinson, who plays Karen in “Shameless”, and Dr Chris Steele, the resident GP on “This Morning”.
The walk will form just one part of a fun-filled day, with live music, fitness activities, food stalls, celebrity guests and children’s activities set to draw the crowds.
People can take part as an individual or as a team and there are still a few days left to sign up.
The walk, which starts at noon, promises to be an eye-catching event, with entrants being encouraged to wear pink tutus, which they can buy for £4.50 on the day, to create a stream of bright colour through the city streets.
The Genesis Appeal is the only UK charity dedicated entirely to the prevention of breast cancer.
Currently, one in 10 women in the UK will develop breast cancer, making it the most common cancer in women in the country, with 44,000 diagnoses a year.
The appeal has helped to fund the Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Centre, which is Europe’s first purpose-built centre of its kind.
The £14 million state-of-the-art project — based at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester — brings together internationally recognised medical experts and houses pioneering work into diagnosis, education and research into the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.
Registration for the event costs £12 and £8 for children over five-years-old.
There is no minimum sponsorship sum and there is still time to register to take part.
Anyone who would like to register can visit www.genesisuk.org or e-mail info@genesisuk.org, or call The Genesis Appeal’s office on 0161-291 4400.
