Residents kitted up and ready to make a difference
A DAY in the sun and a little hard work reaped huge rewards for residents of a Diggle hamlet.
It meant they cleared the road leading to their homes of weeds and rubbish, and discovered a new sense of community.
The idea came from neighbours Maggie Buckley and Vicky Harrington, who enlisted the help of Vicky’s husband, Mick, and another neighbour, Jon Stoker, to leaflet houses in an appeal for help.
They chose a sunny day and willing workers ranging from their mid-teens to over-80 turned out with all manner of equipment from spades and brushes to a mini-digger to tackle Harrop Court Road.
Maggie said: “The gullies were overgrown with weeds and grass, and people had dumped rubbish all up the lane. We had a representative from virtually every household, and with so many people helping we soon made progress.
“We were there for the whole of the morning and it built up great community spirit, we all had a good laugh and a smashing time.
“The results are incredible, it’s made a phenomenal difference to the look of the road, it seems wider and much cleaner.”
The residents are planning more clean-ups in July and August to keep the road spick and span.
