Fun for all!

Organisers of Saddleworth’s flagship summer show were today celebrating a bonanza turn-out.
Thousands poured on to Churchill playing fields at Greenfield to enjoy the spectacular event in bright sunshine.
At one point, a huge queue stretched more than a quarter of a mile down the road and show director Gordon Russell said: “It’s been a fabulous success. The weather really set the scene for a truly great day out.”
Organised by Saddleworth and Oldham Metro Rotary Clubs, the show was sponsored by Veolia Environmental Services and the Oldham Evening Chronicle.
This year, underpinned by two main arenas which increased the number of acts, the event was hosted by Granada TV’s presenter Paul Crone who joined in the fun by taking part in the Donkey Derby and a comedy shoot-out with Chaddy Owl.
Malhamdale Falconry’s birds of prey, travelling at more than 100mph, flew over the heads of the enthralled audience and Petwise Zoo’s 100 animals provided shows throughout the day.
And, keeping with the show’s part-country pursuits theme, visitors tried their hand at laser clay pigeon shooting and fly fishing — on grass.
The English Civil War Society offered a colourful display and gave visitors the chance to experience the sights and smells of the 17th century.
In the show’s main arena, Tom and Tilly Tomfoolery — the world’s almost flying three-wheeled comedy car — and the Wacky Tumblairs had families applauding their comical antics.
Children were encouraged to take part in a prize-winning scarecrow competition and gained free entry to the show by turning up in appropriate garb.
Last year, the show raised nearly £8,000 for local and Rotary charities but organisers, who are still totting up the takings, believe this year’s figure will be much higher.
Said Mr. Russell: “It’s been an unqualified success and I’d like to thank everyone who made the event such a huge joy.”
Phil Woolas, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, broadcast live to BBC TV’s Sunday lunchtime political show. He said: “It gave me a chance to give the event a big plug.”
