Down on the farm... in Fitton Hill
Date published: 19 June 2009
THE farmyard is coming to Fitton Hill, thanks to a wide-ranging scheme to help people get back to nature.
An unused area of allotments off Dowry Street, Hathershaw, has been transformed into a community site.
This currently features an orchard, a range of polytunnels growing vegetables and recycling facilities.
Plans were today put in place for it to support pigs, chickens and bees.
Councillor Brian Lord, cabinet member for adult services and health, said: “The Fitton Hill project is an excellent example of community working that has seen the council work with the local community and other partners to transform a patch of underused and overgrown land into a tremendous facility to give local people the opportunity to raise animals and grow their own food and work together and learn new skills.
“There will also be opportunities for local schools and people with learning difficulties who are involved with the community occupation service that gets people working in local parks.”
