Oldham Works — a major campaign to boost Oldham, its business, its people

MORE than a local store — that’s the motto of business partners Saj Singh and Narinder Kaur who have invested more than £20,000 to lift the spirits on people in Derker.

The husband and wife team owns Singh’s Superstore, in London Road, which has become a hub of local activity.

In the 18 years that Saj and Narinder have been running the business — which started life as a corner shop — the pair have transformed not only the property but also the outlook of the area.

“We believe we have made a real contribution to lifting people’s spirits — they want to see the area taking pride in itself and that is what we have tried to do,” said Narinder.

The latest revamp includes a makeover of the shop front and interior of the store, which has doubled in size since the pair started trading in 1991.

In addition to the usual range of groceries, Singh’s Superstore offers PayPal services, allowing customers to pay all manner of bills, money transfer, cheque clearance, DVD hire and friendly advice on a range of issues.

“I honestly believe we are more than corner shop, we a big part of the local community.

“We were nominated for a Chronicle Pride in Oldham award by our customers and that says how much we are valued. It is important to us.”

Open seven days a week, Singh’s is living proof that the retail trade is alive and well in Oldham.
