OLDHAM’S culturally diverse community was celebrated in a week of activities to mark National Refugee Week.
The event explored the arts, culture and education to encourage greater awareness of how people become refugees and to create a better understanding between communities.
Fun ways of discovering other people’s origins included food tasting, live music and dance, and a six-a-side football tournament with teams from across the borough.
James Mwale, Oldham Athletic Community Trust’s inclusion co-ordinator, said: “Within Oldham we are lucky to have such a culturally diverse community, and events such as these enable us to celebrate this fact.
“Within society, people can sometimes perceive people in certain ways through stereotypes, but by bringing people together and educating about different cultures and personal circumstances, we can help people to understand and respect each other more.”
