Lads get to sample life in the Army

PHYSICAL endurance and camaraderie were the order of the day for two local lads as they joined the Army’s northern warrior insight course.

Organised by the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment at the Infantry Training Centre (ITC) in Catterick, Yorkshire, the five-day course was designed to give participants a true flavour of Army life.

Joe Snape (22) and Nathan Batey (17) from Oldham were tested on their skills in team work, precision and stamina, requiring motivation and determination, the would-be soldiers did not know they possessed.

They enjoyed a diverse range of activities, including completing assault courses, rifle training, grenade throwing as well as observation work and map reading.

Combined with 5.30am wake-up calls and a gruelling fitness schedule, the challenges provided the perfect opportunity for the lads to get an insight into Army life.

Staff Sgt Stevie Binns said: “They definitely rose to the challenge and seemed to really enjoy their experience. Even though most of them had not met before the course, they worked well together and that’s what serving in the Army is all about.”
