A fireman who won a commendation after rescuing three children from a blazing house in Sholver is retiring after 31-years in the brigade.

Popular Malcolm Butler (49), of Chadderton, a father-of-five, started his career at Broughton Fire Service where he spent 17 years.

He later moved to Oldham Fire Station on Lees Road, where he completed a further 14 years.

Mr Butler recalled some of the highlights of his career: “The best part of the job was when I was recognised for saving the lives of three children who were trapped in a blazing house in September, 1997.

“Another has been my colleagues who I have enjoyed working with,” he said.

“I always looked forward to going into work because you would never know what will happen next — everyday was different. I want to thank everyone for making my job so enjoyable,” he added. The lads are like my extended family and I will miss them, but I won’t miss the 15-hour shift which started at 6pm,” he joked. Mr Butler, who has four grandchildren, is hoping to spend his retirement with family and friends. He is also training to be a driving instructor.

Station commander John Varey praised Mr Butler’s exceptional work throughout the years, by adding: “Malcolm was a very popular member of the fire service and will be sadly missed.

“He has done 31-years exemplary service where he has not only served his colleagues but the people of Oldham for such a long time.”
