ACTIVE students at Oldham Sixth Form College put their best foot forward to take part in a physical activity week.

Students and staff tied up their trainers to walk the distance from the college to London, a total of 181 miles.

Willing walkers followed the route on a pre-marked area outside the college and had a week to achieve their goal.

And the fit and healthy students smashed their target by walking 400 miles altogether.

The week was held to achieve the Get Set award from the London 2012 Olympic Committee.

Sporting sessions held during the week included martial arts, badminton, athletics, streetdance and cricket.

The closing ceremony featured cyclist and Olympic silver medallist Bryan Steel, who congratulated the college and students on their achievements.

l This week is also National School Sports Week, and pupils throughout Oldham are jumping at the chance to try out new sporting activities.

Failsworth School is just one of the many taking part.

Vicky Dean, partnership development manager for Failsworth School sport partnership, said: “Failsworth and other schools are hosting large events to link to the Olympics and National School Sports Week.

“The aim is to encourage pupils to give their best and to involve children who had perhaps switched off to sport.”

Around 1,200 Failsworth School pupils took part in a day of sport.
