Thousands could be affected by fuel poverty

A PARISH councillor has warned the health of up to 4,000 Saddleworth villagers could be affected by fuel poverty.

And Royce Franklin, chairman of the parish council’s fuel poverty sub-committee, is asking local organisations to identify residents who may need help.

Households are said to be in fuel poverty when they spend more than 10 per cent of their income heating their home.

Mr Franklin said: “It is not easy to determine the extent of the problem but figures show it could have some impact on the health of over 4,000 people in the Saddleworth area who are suffering from long-term illnesses.

“There is certainly a need to identify vulnerable groups such as the elderly, families with children, disabled people or those suffering from longer term conditions, like arthritis, heart disease, stroke, diabetes.”

The sub-committee is aiming to work with other organisations and groups in Saddleworth to improve the take-up of grants, and highlight initiatives and energy efficiency advice.

Some publicity at Yorkshire Day is likely and posters are to be displayed throughout Saddleworth publicising the availability of grants.

During the next few weeks the sub-committee intends to contact local organisations throughout Saddleworth to identify residents likely to benefit from grants and other help.

Mr Franklin added: “It has to be taken into account the average cost nationally of heating homes is now £1,243 compared with £580 in 2005.

“Eradicating fuel poverty can prevent a return of a condition after discharge from medical treatment, improve people’s sense of well-being and reduce excess winter deaths.”
