Canal craft chance for the creative
Date published: 03 July 2009
Admirers of the decorative canal art, Roses and Castles, a familiar sight on the UK’s canal network, have the chance to learn the craft from an expert tomorrow.
Roses and Castles has become the popular term for the paintwork which dates back to the industrial revolution and can include a number of different flowers featured alongside castles. The decoration is seen on the picture panels of narrowboats and household items such as water jugs and buckets.
As an extra bonus, local artist Pat Osbourne will be leading some sessions on the traditional skill of rag rug making at the Stanedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre.
With the right skills wall hangings, cushions and blankets can be made. The drop-in canal craft workshops will run from 10am-4pm.
James Dean, visitor services manager, said: “For people who like being creative and trying something new, this could be the event for them.
“We cater for all ages and abilities so everyone is welcome.”
Anyone interested in booking a place on one of the Roses and Castles courses should contact the Stanedge team on 01484- 844 298.
Places cost £40 for half a day rag rug making and half a day Roses & Castles painting. More information about Stanedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre is available from www.standedge.co.uk
