Class of ’49 reunited

Raising a glass to the old Failsworth Secondary Modern . . . the class of ‘49
It may be 60 years since they left the classroom, but these old boys still have fond memories of Failsworth Secondary Modern School for Boys.
The Partington Street school was recently demolished following the opening of the £26 million new Failsworth School in Brierley Avenue.
But the regular reunions of former pupils who left in 1949 are growing in popularity. The most recent was when 31 of them gathered at the Dog and Patridge pub in Woodhouses.
A buffet was laid on as the group chatted about old times.
Organiser Alan Hughes, now 75, said: “It started when four of us went to a friend’s funeral and saw so many people we knew. We decided it was a shame only to meet at funerals so we began the reunions.
“We did go around the old school before it was demolished and saw vast changes. The head showed us the log of the old school which opened in 1942 when it had 240 pupils. When it closed it had 650.”
