Schools rise to orienteering challenge

CHILDREN from schools in Shaw and Royton took part in an orienteering competition at Tandle Hill Country Park.
Pupils from St Joseph’s RC Primary, Blackshaw Lane, SS Aiden and Oswald, St Anne’s, Royton, Thornham St James’s and Firbank School took part in the fun challenge.
The boys’ and girls’ teams were timed as they located various points in the park.
But the winning group, which was able to find all the markers in the fastest time, were boys from St Joseph’s School, who were awarded a special trophy.
The competition was organised by Steve Hill, teacher at St Joseph’s, and Laura Vayro, countryside officer at Tandle Hill.
Laura said: “There were some children who had never done orienteering and others who had but they all did really well.”
