The lines are modern, but the name, Astoria, harks back to a bygone era in Oldham
A CUTTING EDGE housing development that will continue the trend for urban living in Oldham is almost complete.
Great Places Housing Group has given the name The Astoria to the new block of 48 two-bedroom apartments on the former site of a Victorian school in Cardinal Street.
It has been built by Artisan, a leader in stylish urban living, and the new homes are now being offered for affordable rent to local people.
The name was picked for its many positive connotations — because its suggestion of elegance will suit the stunning-looking building — but also for its local connections.
Matthew Harrison, deputy chief executive and director of development at Great Places, said: “Astoria is a name that’s rooted in legend and mythology. There are several great places in America called Astoria and it’s been the name of hotels and cinemas all over. Oldham, of course, had its own Astoria that attracted the likes of The Beatles in the 1960s, and that, too, was a factor in our choice.”
Some of the ground-floor apartments will be heated through one eco-friendly central heating plant using geothermal heat from a 150-metre deep-bore heat pump.
There will be secure parking, fantastic views towards the Pennines, and high standards of insulation.
