Annie marks her century

SPRIGHTLY centenarian Annie Miller certainly had it tough as a child growing up in Oldham.

The soon to be great-grandmother had to help her mother Ada Newton raise her siblings following her father’s death from TB when Annie was only a teenager.

After school, Annie worked as a winder in Derker Mill while developing her passion for dressmaking in her spare time.

She married her late husband, Wilfred, at St James’s Church in Derker and the couple had a son and a daughter and five grandchildren.

Wilfred, who died in 1997, wrote and produced many amateur dramatic plays and Annie loved nothing more than helping out behind the scenes with costumes and make-up.

Annie stayed at the family home in St Anne’s Crescent, Grasscroft, until 2005 when she moved to Millfield Residential Home in Waterhead.

She marked her 100th birthday with a meal for family and friends at the White Hart in Lydgate
