A leading Oldham solicitor has been elected to represent over 34,000 litigation lawyers at the Law Society.

Keith Etherington, of Oldham firm Mellor and Jackson, will represent the solicitors on the council of the Law Society for England and Wales.

He takes up his new role, which lasts for four years, on July 22.

He has worked for Mellor and Jackson since leaving North Chadderton School in 1987, starting initially as the office junior and working his way through the ranks.

He was President of the Oldham Law Association in 2006.

Besides his full-time role as a solicitor, he teaches law and legal practice for the Institute of Legal Executives’ qualification.

He believes his new role will have major challenges, including a review of reforms to civil costs, and the Ministry of Justice’s plans to streamline low value road accident claims.

Mr Etherington is a senior litigator with the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers, a member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists, and Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives.

For the last six years he has been on the Law Society Council representing newly qualified solicitors and has previously represented the Junior Lawyers Division.
