Travellers set up on Edge

Date published: 14 July 2009

DOZENS of caravans appeared on Oldham Edge as travellers once again set up camp in the town.

In 2009 groups of travellers have pitched up at Haggate in Royton, Tweedale Way in Chadderton, the car park at the former B&Q car park in the town centre and Refuge Street in Shaw.

Councillor John McCann, member for community services and housing, said: “Oldham Council officers are aware of this problem and visited the site yesterday to start the necessary procedures to deal with this latest unauthorised encampment of travellers. The cost of cleaning-up, after travellers have left a mess on public sites, runs into thousands of pounds a year and that is money that would be far better spent on other services.

“We encourage all Oldham residents to help us tackle such problems and I would urge anyone who spots fly-tipping anywhere in the borough to report it to us by calling 0161-700 6644.
