SMOKE signals . . . steam escapes from under the ground on Horsedge Street
PEDESTRIANS were left puzzled when clouds of steam billowed up from underneath a grass verge on Horsedge Street.
The strange occurrence happened over the weekend and yesterday. All became clear when engineers discovered a burst water pipe was cascading water on to underground heating pipes heading for houses on St Mary’s estate.
One theatre-goer saw clouds of steam as he headed for his car after an evening at the Coliseum on Saturday. He said: “We wondered what on earth was happening.”
