AN 88-YEAR-OLD man has died after being dragged under a caravan while crossing a road yesterday.
The drama unfolded shortly after noon as the pensioner left Royton Post Office and attempted to cross Rochdale Road while traffic was stationary.
Witnesses said the man stepped over a towbar connecting a car and a caravan, but was hit by the caravan when the car started moving. He was dragged under the caravan chassis.
Shocked shoppers looked on as fire crews used hydraulic lifts and an air bag to lift the rear wheels of the caravan.
The man suffered head injuries and was placed on a spinal board and in a neck brace by paramedics before being taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital where he later died.
Police diverted traffic up High Barn Street for about 45 minutes.
One shopper, who did not want to be named, said: “If it hadn’t have been for the car behind which flashed its lights, the driver would have just carried on.”
Witnesses should call police on 0161-856-8473.
