Plan a route to better health

TAKE to your feet and save your health is the message from walkit. campaigners this week.

Oldham Council is working with walkit.com — the urban walking route planner website — to plan walking routes across the borough.

The website calculates distance, calories burned by walking and the amount of CO2 saved by entering a start location or postcode and a destination.

It has been calculated that walking from Spindles Town Square shopping centre to Alexandra Park, Oldham, instead of taking the car, will burn 121 calories and save 0.43 kg of CO2.

The website also provides a route map and step-by-step directions.

As part of Climate Change Week this week there will be a demonstration of walkit.com and the chance to try it in the One Stop Shop, at the Civic Centre, between 11.30am and 2pm tomorrow.

Mohib Uddin, Oldham Council cabinet member for regeneration, said: ”The website includes many walking routes in Oldham and should encourage people to be more adventurous and get out and visit some of the best that Oldham has to offer.

“At the same time people will be keeping fit and helping the environment, so the website really is worth a try”.

Oldham is the third borough in Greater Manchester to register details about its attractions, destinations and points of interest on the website.

All 10 councils in Greater Manchester will be included on walkit.com by next spring.
