Super engine is ready for action

A new state-of-the-art fire engine has been handed over to crews in Mossley.
Area Commander Barry Jones joined fire authority members, councillors and station staff to hand over the keys to the Volvo engine, one of 24 recently bought by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service at a cost of £3.8 million. The new machines use lightweight, non-corrosive and recyclable polymer bodywork on a steel chassis for a longer lifespan.
Each new engine costs around £160,000 and is equipped with all the latest technological advances including an electronic fully automatic gearbox, assisted braking, and central locking.
County Fire Officer Barry Dixon said: “It is vital for the protection of both the public and fire fighters alike that the service invests in high quality training, equipment and fire engines.”
