AREA of peace . . . Val Pemberton at Shaw Memorial Gardens where youths have been playing ball games
Former Shaw and Crompton parish councillor Val Pemberton says residents have been upset to see youths playing cricket and football in Shaw’s memorial garden.
Since a “No Ball Games” sign vanished, youngsters have taken advantage at the contemplative spot, off Westway. Mrs Pemberton, who said she had complained to the council but nothing had been done, added: “It’s a place of respect and I’m concerned about it.”
Councillor Mark Alcock, Cabinet member for environment and infrastructure, said: “A new sign has been ordered. It should be remembered that this year Oldham Council has made a substantial investment in summer activities and it is to be hoped that local young people will take advantage of these in their local area.”
The full schedule of activities can be found at www.oldham.gov.uk/passport_to_summer_events_brochure.pdf.
