Robert and Caroline Steel and their not-entirely-usual wedding transport
IT’S usually the bride who makes a big entrance on her wedding day.
But groom Robert Steel made a show-stopping arrival when he got hitched to fiancee Caroline Crawley (29) at East Crompton St James’s Church on Saturday.
The 35-year-old trucker decked out a lorry cab in blue and ivory ribbons and flags — reflecting the couple’s love of Oldham Athletic — to travel to the picturesque church.
He then whisked off his new bride in the Daf 105 to their reception at St Anne’s Rugby Club, Higginshaw.
The pair, of Swansea Street, Abbeyhills, met on a night out in Oldham town centre about nine years ago and have two children, Charlotte, 19 months, and Robert nine months.
They are both avid Latics fans and the wedding had a blue and ivory theme, with the tables at the reception named after the club’s legends.
Robert’s interest in trucks was sparked when he passed his test at the age of 17 and he was a driver-electrician in the Army. He always vowed to arrive at his wedding in a truck and works for G Woodcock and Son, Royton, who lent him the cab.
Thankfully Caroline, a legal secretary agreed, and Robert explained: “My cab is maroon with a red skirt, but I did not want anything with red because that’s a Man United colour.
“It’s something a bit different and memorable. Not many people see a truck going down the road with ‘Just Married’ on it!”
Caroline said: “It’s great, he’s living his dream and I am living it with him.”
