Party raises £500

TORRENTIAL rain failed to stop determined revellers turning out on Saturday for a day of fun at a street party in Chadderton.

Brooklands Avenue was turned into a party scene, and residents tucked into a huge potato pie, played games, pottered round stalls and enjoyed music from duos Wild and Wicked and the Duffy Twins.

“Both acts were absolutely brilliant,” said organiser Val Shaw. “It was pouring down, which kept a few people away, but those who came had a really good day and I want to thank everyone who turned out to support us.

“A lot of people worked really hard to make it a success, particularly my husband, Alan, and I would also like to thank them,” said Val.

The street party raised about £500 for Link4Pink, which supports Oldham’s Victoria Breast Care Unit.

Val’s original idea was to host a small lunch-time party for a few residents to join in the nation’s Big Lunch, held to encourage neighbours to get to know each other better.

But it turned into a much bigger event when her local police community support officer urged her to throw it open as a street party.
