A touch of glamorous Eastern promise came to Saddleworth . . . and raised a tenth of the total needed for a major life-saving initiative.

The £100,000 Christie at Oldham Campaign was launched in March by the world-famous Christie Hospital and the Evening Chronicle to support the £17 million radiotherapy centre under construction on the Royal Oldham Hospital site.

Now the campaign has been boosted by a dedicated Saddleworth duo who have raised a staggering £10,800-plus in a single, glittering event.

Bollywood Dreams, at the White Hart, Lydgate, offered more than 170 guests the chance to dress in stunning Indian outfits and share the magic of an authentic Eastern spectacular.

Guests entering the inn’s Oak Room were greeted by a huge pink model elephant, Melanie, draped in Rajastani silk, jewels and pearls.

The elephant, which took top prize in the Saddleworth Beer Walk, was showpiece of the Bollywood event which included a champagne reception and six-course Indian banquet.

A stunning cabaret featured a team of breathtaking Indian dancers who performed to familiar songs from the multi-award winning film, “Slumdog Millionaire”.

The spectacular was organised by Dobcross sub-postmaster Sukhi Singh and Andrea Mills, who have formed the MillSingh Foundation with the aim to raise funds for charities whose purpose is to benefit local residents in the area.

Speaking after the event, Sukhi said: “It was a truly unforgettable night and we are already looking forward to arranging our next themed event.

“We were overwhelmed by support from businesses and the very kind people of Saddleworth and other areas.”

Andrea said: “It’s been hard work for a committee of two but the successful result made it more than worthwhile. We are grateful to all those who have given us such tremendous support.”

Mrs Caroline Shaw, chief executive officer of Christies, told guests about the Oldham radiotherapy centre and its benefits to Oldham’s community, which was greatly received.

The centre is the first in a network of Christie radiotherapy centres which aim to take first-class cancer treatment, provided by Christie experts, closer to people’s homes. There are more than a thousand new cases of cancer each year in Oldham.
