Carl’s flare for telling tales from the 70s

LOCAL author Carl Spiers digs out his platforms and flares to step back in style to a time when Oldham was great town to grow up in.

His latest book “A Teenage Rampage” is a romp through his years as an adolescent in the borough.

It spans the years 1973 to 1980 and Carl (48) said: “It was just a great town to grow up in at the time. There was such a lot going with the discos like The Cat’s Whiskers.

“There was a youth club in every district and the town centre was a much busier place, it was a focal point for young people. You met people from all over Oldham and made life-long friendships.

“A Teenage Rampage” is Carl’s fifth book and follows the publication of “100-plus Characters of Oldham” — described by one reviewer as the best book ever written about what makes Oldham, Oldham.

The new book continues where his previous memoir “In the Town Where I Was Born” left off.

Carl, a local promoter, is holding a book launch at the town centre Candlelight Club from 1pm on Saturday. Copies cost £15 and will be available from the Oldham Chronicle office from Monday as well as on e-bay.

He added: “There are a lot of jokes and a lot of fun stuff that will make people smile — hopefully.

“I sell a lot of my books to ex-pats. I have had orders from Australia, South America and across Europe. People like looking back.”
