A parish councillor is being feted for creating a stunning display of blooms, despite his greenhouse being wrecked by vandals.

Keith Begley, vice-chairman of Saddleworth Parish Council and one of the key members of the Wake Up Delph Committee, was left with carnage after the attack at his allotment two months ago.

Ten panes of glass were shattered and newly-planted blooms in hanging baskets were covered in shards of glass.

The attack came just days before the plants were to be placed at key points in the village as part of Whit Friday celebrations.

But now, after weeks of care and painstaking restoration work, the plants are a summer highlight and earning praise from locals and visitors.

Councillor Begley said: “It’s gratifying, that despite the blooms being attacked before they had actually left my greenhouse, the displays have turned out so well. They do add a lovely splash of colour to Delph and I am glad they are appreciated.”

Dave Palmer, landlord of the White Lion, said: “The flowers and shrubs really enhance the approach to the village and the main streets.”

Village baker Denise Wildes, added: “I have received lots of favourable comments from customers. The plants are a big attraction.”
