Great Wall trek challenge

AN intrepid group of volunteers from Dr Kershaw’s Hospice is embarking on its greatest challenge yet — a fund-raising trek on the Great Wall of China.

The Royton hospice has teamed up with Rochdale’s Springhill Hospice for a five-day adventure which will see fund-raisers tackle challenging climbs and take in spectacular scenery.

Five days of demanding trekking will be followed by a brief rest in Beijing before the journey home.

Seven brave volunteers have so far signed up to the challenge and have now thrown out an invitation for other adventurers to join them.

Anyone who accepts has until October to raise a minimum of £2,900 — more than half of which will go towards supporting the hospices.

It costs £4,400 to run Dr Kershaw’s every single day to help it provide specialist care and support to patients and their families.

Urging more people to join the group of dedicated fund-raisers in going the extra mile for the charity, community fund-raiser Allegra Holbrook said: “The trek will be hard work but also incredibly rewarding, both in terms of experience and in how valuable the money raised will be.”

She also called on Oldham companies to sponsor trekkers who will be working flat out to make sure they reach the £2,900 target for taking part.

An information evening about the trek will be held on Tuesday, August 25.
