Britain in Bloom judges descend on Oldham
OLDHAM’S flora and fauna were the subject of intense scrutiny as judges inspected the borough’s entry into Britain in Bloom.
Town centre hanging baskets, tubs and boxes were examined by judges Peter Wiseman and Brian Whalley who were accompanied by deputy council leader Jackie Stanton and Glenn Dale, horticultural services manager for Oldham Council.
Britain in Bloom is one of the longest running and best known environmental competitions in Britain. Since 1964, communities across the North-West have demonstrated their ability to create and maintain attractive environments which benefit residents and visitors alike.
Every city, town, urban community and village is eligible to enter along with tourist attractions, hotels, pubs and shopping centres.
The aim is to improve surroundings through imaginative use of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping alongside a litter free and sustainable environment.
With their walkabout over, the judges stopped off at Gallery Oldham for lunch and a look at a specially-produced DVD all about Oldham. The final decision will be announced at the end of October.
