FAREWELL . . . Hundreds of mourners line up to pay their respects to Junaid Khan
Park packed for funeral of ‘much-loved’ son, 21
SEVERAL hundred mourners gathered at Werneth Park to pay their respects to murder victim Junaid Khan.
The venue was packed for yesterday’s funeral of the 21-year-old of Cotton Mill Crescent, Werneth, who was shot 17 times in the car park of a doctors’ surgery in Block Lane, Chadderton.
Male mourners crowded round to see and touch the body and say their farewells before lining up for prayers.
A separate gathering for women had taken place earlier at the Freehold Club, Gloucester Street North, Werneth.
The former South Chadderton School pupil was gunned down in cold blood in the early hours of July 9, shocking the community.
A silver Mitsubishi 4x4 was seen in the area at the time of the shooting and later found burned out at the former Red Barn car park — now the Ancora Italian restaurant — on Broadway.
Police are continuing the hunt for the killer and a special investigations team has conducted house-to-house inquiries and delivered leaflets to gather information.
His distraught family — including father Mumtaz Khan (60) and mother Taj Mahal — have said they know of no motive for the killing of a much-loved son and have spoken of their devastation.
Sister Raheela Khan said: “Knowing that he will never return breaks our hearts in a million pieces.”
