Adam hits 111 not out to scoop a trip to Lords

A CENTURY-scoring young cricketer hit a team from the world’s most famous cricket club for six to scoop a trip to Lord’s.

Adam Johnson (17) was the star man with an unbeaten 111 to inspire the Hulme 1st XI Cricket team to a stunning victory against the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) in the school’s annual match at Werneth Cricket Club.

He was rewarded by being presented with The Hugh Milling Memorial Trophy and was also given a trip to Lord’s to spend the day in the president’s box. He is also in line to receive a cricket bat signed by the MCC team.

Tight bowling from Hulme restricted the MCC team, who were of all ages, not just youngsters, to just 22 runs from the first 10 overs and they eventually declared on 175 for 5.

Adam faced the first ball of the day and was still at the crease to hit the winning runs as Hulme clocked up 178 for 5.

MCC play at the home of cricket, Lord’s, and Adam will be off to the famous old ground in London to enjoy his prize next season.

After benefiting from expert coaching and world-class facilities, many young cricketers from MCC go on to enjoy successful careers in county or international cricket — with graduates including both Ian Botham and Phil Tufnell.

Adam has just finished Year 12 at Hulme Grammar School for Boys and, as well as playing for the school team, also plays cricket for Flowery Fields, near Hyde.

He said: “I was very proud of my performance. The prize is really nice and I can’t wait to go to Lords.”

Delighted mum Jean Johnson said: “He is really looking forward to the trip to Lord’s. My husband watches Adam play cricket all the time and is so proud of him.”
