IT’S A RUBBISH STREET . . . Fly-tipping in London Road, Derker
NEIGHBOURS in Derker said fly-tipping and vandalism is blighting their area.
Jean Holroyd (69), from London Road, said a pile of garden rubbish and fence panels was dumped in the alleyway between her street with Crabtree Road.
The great-grandmother said the waste, dumped on Tuesday, is the latest in a series of incidents affecting the Housing Market Renewal (HMR) area.
She said more needs to be done to keep the remaining residents safe.
“The fly-tipping is a regular thing, it is everywhere in the area.
“My son’s garage roof was kicked in three weeks ago, as was my back gate.
“People are running riot because there are no residents anymore. There are only four occupied houses out of about 20 on this part of London Road.”
Mrs Holroyd, who has lived in the same house for 45 years, called for greater police presence and safety measures installed.
She said: “I’ve lived in the same house for 45 years and I never remember it being this bad.
“We’re supposed to have PCSOs walking round but I’ve not seen them.”
Graham Brierley (38), from neighbouring Crabtree Road, said: “Because there are no residents, there is no maintenance by HMR and no clean-up campaign for the backs of the houses.
“They won’t install an alleygating scheme or repair the roads because of the planned regeneration, but that won’t be finished until 2012.”
Julie Thompson, neighbourhood programme manager for the Derker HMR area, said: “As soon as this case was reported we called out a team to search for evidence and the police are also helping us to examine CCTV footage.
“These investigations inevitably delay the clean-up process, but now they have been completed, the rubbish will be cleared today which is two days after the issue was reported.”
