STAFF at Tesco Oldham will light a torch for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice when they kick off a new appeal with a 24-hour bike ride.

The challenge will see staff keep an in-store exercise bike turning for 24 hours to herald the start of Pass the Torch campaign.

And the store is looking for another local company or organisation willing to take the on the torch while it holds a fundraising event, before passing it on.

The Huddersfield Road store has also made an appeal for a local gym to lend an exercise bike to staff who are eager to start their round-the-clock cycle.

Dr Kershaw’s community fundraiser, Allegra Holbrook, is on the lookout for someone willing to take on the challenge.

She said: “The next event must be bigger than the 24-hour bike ride — defined in terms of people involved, distance travelled, space used, the possibilities are endless.”

She explained the idea was to split the load of an event between many people, such as 26 running a mile each to cover the distance of a marathon.

Allegra said the rules meant each group must take up the challenge from someone else, and the challenge must exceed theirs in scope:

“How you define that is up to you,” she added. “We will help with ideas and events.”
