Teenagers told: be reservoir dodgers

That is the message of a hard-hitting advertising campaign warning Oldham youngsters tempted to swim in reservoirs.

The campaign shows floral tributes left at the waterside and was launched in Oldham because it is a hot spot for such incidents, according to water company United Utilities.

Eight people have drowned in North-West reservoirs over the past four years.

In July, a man had to be rescued by fire crews after he went for a swim in Dovestone Reservoir and got into difficulties after suffering cramp.

And hours beforehand a teenager was warned by police after “tombstoning” — jumping — from rocks into the water, which is 50ft deep in places and has dangerous rocks and ledges.

The adverts with the floral tributes will be used on Facebook, while radio adverts will run on XFM and Galaxy throughout August featuring a disturbing account from a teenager who witnessed his friend drown.

New signs are also being installed at the most at-risk reservoirs, spelling out the dangers in stark language.

Martin Padley, from United Utilities, said: “The campaign shows the tragic aftermath of a reservoir drowning, and the lifelong pain it causes family and friends. Although the imagery and accounts in the ads are fictitious, they are based closely on real incidents.

“Our message is simple: stay safe, stay out.”

A film warning of the dangers is available at www.unitedutilities.com/reservoirsafety. Families can also download activity sheets and water safety colouring posters from the site.
