Date published: 12 August 2009
A CAR was stolen with a five-year-old child still in the back.
The thief swooped after a 32-year-old woman left the engine running while she got out of her Vauxhall Astra in Boardman Lane, Middleton, at 1.30pm on Monday.
He tried to lift the boy out of the car but drove off when he was disturbed by the mother.
The thief abandoned the car a few minutes later in Broad Street and a resident found the boy crying in the street.
The offender is described as a white man, aged between his late teens and mid-twenties, about 5ft 9in tall and was either balding or had a shaved head.
He was wearing a light grey fleece top with the hood pulled up, covering his face.
Det Sgt Jason Burke of Rochdale CID said: “Fortunately, the boy was unharmed but this could have ended horribly and the person responsible must be caught.”
