Bonding over bat and ball
Date published: 17 August 2009
POLICE officers and the community have joined together to show teamwork is vital in the fight against crime.
Neighbourhood officers in Royton and Shaw were bowled over as they went head to head with young people in a community cricket match.
The aim was to get to know residents better and use the opportunity to give crime prevention advice.
The teams stepped out at Shaw Cricket Club, Mark Lane, for the game of Twenty20 cricket.
PCSO Pamela Rothwell said everyone had been looking forward to this year’s match and a big turnout.
She said: “We ran a similar event last year, which was a great success with over 40 residents turning up to watch the game.
“These events really bring the community together and help residents, and the young people in particular, get to know their local officers.”
PC Rob Fitzgerald has just joined the neighbourhood team and was looking forward to introducing himself to residents.
He said: “This a fun, informal way to meet the local community and find out about any concerns they may have.
“As well as joining in the fun, the neighbourhood team will be giving out crime prevention advice and promoting Home Watch.”
Sports Development helped to organise the event and provided umpires and equipment.
