THE gloves are off for Oldham East teenagers who are on a mission to turn their lives around.
The group has joined forces with Groundwork to reduce NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) figures in the area.
The NEET re-engagement project, which has been running since January, has seen the group apply for money from the Kerching fund and get involved with Oldham Boxing Club. Eric Noi, who runs the club, said: “Amateur boxing is one of the few sports in the UK that reaches so successfully into deprived and disadvantaged communities.
“The sport is already achieving significant outcomes in terms of tackling social exclusion, and developing neighbourhoods through very positive and effective engagement of young people.”
Other activities include music sessions, first aid training, drugs awareness and a visit to Ricky Hatton’s training gym.
Zoe Thorpe, NEET re-engagement project officer at Groundwork, said: “The young people have worked extremely hard since being involved in this project and I am thrilled that they are making positive steps to help themselves and others combat NEET in their area.”
