Crash scam trial
Date published: 20 August 2009
A CRASH-for-cash gang staged 90 car smashes in a scam which could have cost the insurance industry £1.8 million.
Rashid Shaikh, of Dewsbury, is facing trial after it was alleged that he had claimed to be the driver in one such incident.
Shaikh (29) admits that a false claim was made in his name — but denies making it himself.
Seventeen others, from Oldham, Bolton, Bury and Rochdale, who put in false injury and damage claims, have pleaded guilty to the conspiracy.
Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court heard that Shaikh claimed to be driving a black Audi when it was involved in a collision with a red Volvo at the Eden Point roundabout on the A34 road into Manchester in October, 2005.
The gang came to light after staff at an office close to the roundabout realised that a lot of similar crashes were taking place and they began to recognise the man responsible.
Shaikh denies conspiracy to defraud. The trial continues.
