IF you fancy an evening of acoustic music, then make a date in Uppermill next month and support the Christie’s at Oldham appeal into the bargain.

A handful of popular artists have promised their time and talents free of charge for the event, which has been organised by musician Michael Turner (pictured). He is bass guitarist with Oldham band, MLC (mid-life crisis), which raised £600 for the Christie appeal by asking for donations instead of payment for gigs.

He said the acoustic evening, at Saddleworth Museum, will feature traditional and contemporary music, covering anything from “Greensleeves” to Green Day, and Dylan to Disney.’

Performers include singer/songwriter Steve Bennett, a former Oldhamer, and Swiss musician James Hoffmeister, together known as Lads o’the Fair.

Singer/songwriter Sarah Turner, from Greenfield, plays folk on keyboards, guitar and mando-cello. And a spot will go to song-writing multi-instrumentalists Ian Cleverdon and Phil Caffrey, who together are the talented folk duo The Huers. They will play a variety of acoustic instruments.

Michael explained: “The main reason I am organising the event is that I am very impressed with the way the Chronicle has got behind the appeal and I wanted to ‘do my bit.’

“Most, if not all of us, will have family or friends who have had to go to the Christie at some time. It is a very worthy cause that will benefit many, many local people.

“The success of the appeal so far also does great credit to the people of Oldham and district and their generosity.”

The acoustic evening takes place on Friday, September 25, and tickets are strictly limited to 80. They cost £10 each from Saddleworth museum or telephone 0161-620 6005.
