Double helping of Dinnerladies
Date published: 24 August 2009
Two Oldham actresses will bring Victoria Wood’s TV sitcom “Dinnerladies” to the stage next month.
Shobna Gulati and Sue Devaney star in the comedy adapted from TV scripts by David Graham.
Shobna, who also played Sunita Patel in “Coronation Street”, reprises her role as Anita, the dippy kitchen hand.
Sue Devaney played Jane in the “Dinnerladies” TV series, but is probably best known for her appearances as Rita Briggs in “Jonny Briggs” and Liz Harker in “Casualty”.
“Dinnerladies” is based on the second TV series, written by Victoria Wood and following the reluctant love story of Bren and Tony, originally played by Victoria Wood and Andrew Dunn. They are egged on by their work colleagues, Dolly, Jean, Twinkle and Anita.
The show, which initially ran for two series from 1998 to 2000, was voted 9th in the all-time list of favourite sitcoms, even though only 16 episodes ever made.
It can be seen at The Lowry, Salford, from Monday September 7 at Saturday September 12.
Victoria Wood was born in Prestwich and educated at Bury Grammar Girls School. She became an honorary patron of The Lowry in 2006.
