Best of the bunch!

GREEN-FINGERED residents in Hathershaw and Fitton Hill have proved their gardening skills again this year.

Thirty-two householders from the New Deal for Communities (NDC) area entered the third Hathershaw and Fitton Hill in Bloom competition, and despite the wet weather, the judges were thrilled with the results.

The competition started in May, and residents had until July 3 to put their perfect gardens forward for the contest.

In Hathershaw, Eileen Dunford of Hadfield Street, was the overall winner; Alexander Harris, of Schofield Street won the best garden category; Fay Jones, of Bute Avenue scooped best new gardener.

Other worthy winners were Dee Lyness and Sue Fink, of Honeywell Lane Alleyway who won best communal garden. Sue Fink also won the best container category.

In Fitton Hill, Carol Johnson of Rosary Road was judged the overall winner, along with Wayne and Carol Goulden, of Broadoak Crescent who won the best garden.

Heather Lee, of St Martin’s Road scooped best new gardener and Diane Maddison and Pat Breen, of Rosary Road won best communal garden.

Lazlo Farkas, of Wildbrook Crescent won the Best Container Display and Pat Bostock of Sportsmans Drive won the Best Pensioner’s Garden.

All winners received Garden Centre vouchers and all who participated were presented with a certificate, while the overall winners also received the winner’s cup and a shield.

Judges assessing the entries were Les Coop (chairman of the NDC board), Peter Rafferty (area manager Street Scene for Hathershaw), Janet Taylor (community development officer), Bernie McConnell (director of housing) Jed Pearson (deputy chief executive) and Mike Worthington (landscape supervisor for Villages Housing).
