The Smart car patrolling Oldham
IT may be small but it certainly packs a powerful punch — motorists beware for this compact crime fighter sees everything.
The minute motor, which has a 12ft mast and camera, was snapped in Oldham Road at the junction with the M60 in Hollinwood.
The aim is to catch motorists using their mobile phones or being otherwise distracted at the wheel.
Two cars are currently being piloted by Greater Manchester Police and the Smart cars are among the first of their kind in the UK.
Anyone caught eating at the wheel, fiddling with the radio or putting on make-up is filmed.
A letter is then be sent to the car’s registered owner detailing the offence, outlining the CCTV evidence and explaining which fines are applicable.
Anyone caught using their mobile will be asked to pay £60 and have three points added to their licence. Fines could also be handed out to anyone who is thought to be driving without due care and attention.
