Party time in Hathershaw
Date published: 27 August 2009
Residents in Hathershaw will be able to show community spirit is alive and well down their street on Saturday.
Anna Balderstone (44) will continue her campaign to whip up community spirit at her party on Meldrum Street, where she is a tenant of Great Places Housing Group.
After arranging a road closure, she has also organised marquees in case of rain. The events include a bonny baby contest, prizes for best-dressed partygoers and a dance tribute to Michael Jackson by the nine to 15-year-old members of Meldrum Street Rap Group.
Anna, a mature student at University Campus Oldham, has previously organised three-a-side street football in her street, with the help of Oldham Athletic FC.
She said: “I wanted to get some old school community spirit back and what better way than a street party?”
The party also marks the end of school holiday activities, kick-started by Anna.
The road has recently been brightened up with resurfacing work and Anna and her neighbours have added colourful hanging baskets and plants.
