HATHERSHAW pupils are celebrating record results as their school is cleared of cheating allegations.

And leading the way is deputy head girl Miyah Frank who chalked up an amazing 5 A*s and 8 As in her GCSEs.

The 16-year-old from Coppice hopes to study medicine at university and said: “My family will be very happy and proud. I am glad that all the hard work paid off.”

The number of Hathershaw pupils achieving the gold standard five A* to C grades, including English and maths, has jumped from 28 per cent to 41 per cent.

And the results excluding English and maths are up from 63 per cent to 74 per cent.

The news comes as the exam boards AQA and Edexcel exonerated the school of accusations of malpractice during this year’s exams.

Delighted head teacher Carol Cawkwell described the results as phenomenal and said: “We have got our best results ever. They are way beyond any targets and reflect the hard work of our staff and students.”

She added: “Earlier this month I was contacted by the examination boards AQA and Edexcel who asked me to investigate allegations of malpractice sent to them in an anonymous letter.

“While I was confident that these allegations were unfounded, they were treated with the utmost seriousness. Both the local authority and school governors were involved in the investigation which, as expected, showed the allegations to be untrue.

“I have recently received letters from both exam boards confirming the matter closed and wishing the school every success in the results this year.”

The cheating claims followed the suspension of two senior teachers amid a separate probe into irregularities in attendance figures.

Mrs Cawkwell could not comment on that issue, but denied a new claim that teaching assistants regularly taught English, maths, and IT.

She was disappointed by the allegations and did not know who was behind them, but added: “I am as always focusing on the students. I want my students coming in today and getting their fabulous results.”
