EVERYTHING in moderation is the key to a long life according to the latest resident to join Oldham’s exclusive 100 club.
Jessie Robinson, who celebrates her 100th birthday on Sunday says she has never smoked or drank too much.
She added: “I never really think about how old I am. You just keep going through the years and then you’re 100.”
Jessie was born one of five children in Kershaw Street, Shaw, and moved to Gravelhole village (now Thornham) when she was two.
She left school at 14 and spent her working life in the cotton mills, before marrying her husband George when she was in her sixties.
George died 27 years ago, but Jessie keeps busy by spending lots of time with her friends and family.
Jessie, of Garden Terrace, Royton, said: “I try not to worry too much as well. I just let worries go and maybe that has helped me live a long time.”
Jessie’s niece, Ann Milnes, said: “Jessie has got a wonderful attitude. She’s always cheerful and she bears her problems with great fortitude.
“She can’t see very well now, but she likes to listen to the radio and spends a lot of time with her friends at the Gravelhole Methodist Church. She is still very sharp and has fantastic recall.”
Jessie will be marking her big day with a service at the church followed by a lunch with her friends and family at Thornham St James Church.
