AS students across Oldham celebrated record GCSE results, few had as many reasons to smile as Calvin Green.
The 16-year-old Saddleworth School pupil scored passes in 13 subjects — with six grade A*-Cs — despite having to spend a year in hospital after doctors discovered he had a brain tumour.
Brave Calvin had to undergo a five-hour operation to remove the tumour and spent five months recovering in hospital.
He missed most of Year 10 and faced the mammoth task of catching up on all the work he had missed when he was finally allowed to return to school.
He said: “I found it really hard and felt like giving up at times. All my friends had moved on and I had to do lots of extra work in school and at home.
“I am a bit disappointed with my results as I thought I had done better but I am proud of myself for passing all 13 subjects.”
Calvin, who will celebrate with friends at Leeds Festival this weekend, will now go to Oldham Sixth-Form College to study biology, PE and leisure studies with the hope of doing a degree in physiotherapy.
Assistant head teacher Stephanie Bateman said: “We need to celebrate Calvin’s courage and his commitment to carry on. We are extremely proud of all our students but Calvin is worthy of particular praise.”
This is a record year at Saddleworth School with 80 per cent of pupils gaining five or more A*-C grades with 67 per cent scoring at least five A*-Cs including English and maths.
Head teacher Patricia Cornish said: “We are delighted to have achieved our best results ever.
“They reflect marvellously on the extremely hard work of all our pupils, teachers and parents.”
