Objections can’t block tram-stop green light

OUTLINE plans to erect a tram stop ready for the Metrolink extension at the existing railway corridor in Chadderton have been given the go-ahead by Oldham Planning Committee — despite local objections.

The stop is proposed along the line over Block Lane and next to Robinson Street and Agnes Street.

A near-by car park/drop-off point is also proposed off Block Lane, close to Ridings Way.

The proposals attracted three letters of objection and a petition containing 40 signatures on the grounds of loss of privacy, increased difficulty of access and parking and disturbance from floodlights.

One resident complained that the proposed platform, which will run parallel to Agnes Street, will block daylight and will be intrusive for residents. he also claimed widening the footpath along Block Lane will narrow the road, making it difficult for motorists to pass.

He urged planners to move the platform close to the Jammy Lane site. James Critchley, agent for the applicant, said that was not feasible.
