Emma gets to grips with Bisto wrestling title

IF you thought gravy was for pouring over pie and chips — think again.

Oldhamer Emma Slater has grappled her way to World Gravy Wrestling Championship glory.

The 23-year-old triumphed over seven other women who took to the ring at the Rose and Bowl pub, in Stacksteads, Rossendale. Gravy makers Bisto supplied 2,000 litres of out-of-date gravy — about 40,000 portions — for the third annual event. Emma, who dressed as Mrs Christmas for the bout, said: “I didn’t register until the last minute because I was only meant to be holding up the cards at the end of each round so it has all come as a big surprise.” Joel Hicks (30), a barrister wrestling under the name “Stone Cold Steve Bisto”, won the men’s final. More than 100 spectators gathered for the charity contest, part of the Pennine Lancashire Festival of Food and Culture.
