Simple, free way to tackle car crime
Date published: 15 September 2009
MOTORISTS are invited to protect their cars from crime and pick up safety advice from police.
The Royton and Shaw Neighbourhood Policing Team is holding a safer plate day at Elk Mill Retail Park on Thursday, from 10am-4pm.
Representatives from the AA will be on hand to fit anti-tamper screws to number plates free of charge.
The screws, which cannot be removed, are then covered with a security cap as an added deterrent.
PCSO Sue Hoyle said: “Offenders steal number plates so that they can clone cars and commit other crimes, ranging from burglary and robbery to driving off from petrol stations without paying.
“I would urge people to come along on Thursday because having these screws fitted is a simple measure that will reduce the risk of cars being targeted and costs nothing.”
